ABOUT US

Our Story

Established in December 2022, the Michigan Workforce Training and Education Collaborative (MWTEC) was born out of the visionary work of Michigan’s community college partners who formed the Educational Programs in Collaboration (EPiC) consortium. These early collaborations demonstrated how colleges could join forces to deliver innovative, shared programs that overcome barriers of geography and resources.

Michigan has a unique higher education landscape. Unlike states with centralized “system” offices overseeing community colleges, Michigan’s colleges operate independently under regional and district governance. This decentralized structure gives institutions flexibility but also creates challenges when coordinating statewide workforce solutions.

Approximately 20% of Michigan’s geographic area—and many residents lie outside any community college district boundaries. These regions often lack direct access to local college services, making workforce training and education less accessible. MWTEC was created specifically to bridge these gaps, ensuring that all Michiganders, regardless of their address, can pursue education and training that leads to high-paying jobs and career advancement.

By working collaboratively across colleges, employers, and workforce partners, MWTEC helps expand training access statewide, building a stronger, more resilient economy for everyone.

Expanding Opportunities

Expanding Opportunities means providing Michigan residents access to training or education in a desired career field, even when opportunities are limited in their community. It’s about ensuring equitable access for all citizens of Michigan to career pathway education and training that leads to high-paying jobs with advancement opportunities.
